Deaths rose by 1.3% in the fourth quarter of 2014

In 2014 as a whole GDP rose by 2.3%

In the fourth quarter of 2014 the number of deaths in the Basque Country stood at 5,017, 1.3% up on the same period of 2013, according to Eustat data. By province, in Álava there were 619 deaths, in Bizkaia there were 2,763 and in Gipuzkoa 1,635 people died.

The provisional data totals for 2014 recorded 19,565 deaths, of which 9,879 were men and 9,686 were women. The annual variation with respect to 2013 was 2.3% more deaths.

In 2014 245 centenarians died, 214 women and 31 men

Amongst the deaths that occurred last year, 38 corresponded to children under one year of age, 21 girls and 17 boys. As regards the 245 individuals who died aged 100 or above, 214 were women and 31 were men. The increase in longevity is clear, particularly among women. In 2014, there were 35 more deaths among the population of centenarians than the year before, and 34 among women of that age group.

Tumours were the main cause of death in 2014

31.6% of the deaths that occurred in 2014, or 6,174 deaths, were due to tumours. Following these were deaths caused by diseases of the circulatory system, 26.2% (5,119 deaths) and, in third place, some way behind, were deaths associated with diseases of the respiratory system, which accounted for 9.2% (1,793).

The cause of death continued to vary according to sex in 2014: amongst men, tumours caused almost 14 percentage points more deaths than diseases of the circulatory system, whilst the main cause of death amongst women was cardiovascular disease, followed in second place by tumours.

Population growth was negative in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa and positive in Álava

With provisional data from 2014, population growth in the Basque Country was negative with deaths exceeding births by 277 individuals. By province, Bizkaia had a negative balance, with its population decreasing by 1,126; Gipuzkoa lost only 33 people and Álava was the only province with a positive balance, its population increasing by 882 inhabitants.
