The retail trade sector of the Basque Country grew by 0.6% in nominal terms in the third quarter of 2014
In constant terms, the year-on-year rate of the sales index posted a 1.6% growth
The sales index for retail trade in the Basque Country posted a 0.6% nominal rise in sales in the third quarter of 2014 with regards to the same period of the previous year in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to data provided by Eustat. Not including service stations, the index rose by 0.8% in its year-on-year rate.
With regards to the previous quarter, the sales index registered a nominal fall of 1.2%, once any seasonal effects had been eliminated.
By sector, food products registered a drop of 4.9% in nominal sales in the third quarter of 2014, retail trade of other products saw a rise of 5.5% and sales of automotive fuel dropped by 1.5%, all with regards to the same period in 2013.
In the retail food sector, the index corresponding to specialised trade was down by 4.3%, as the index for non-specialised trade in mainly food products fell by 5.2%. In retail trade of other products, there was a rise in trade specialising in personal equipment (13.1%), in trade specialising in household equipment (2.6%), and in trade specialising in other consumer goods (0.3%), and a fall in the non-specialised sector in mainly other products, which was down by 2.8%.
By Province, the only decrease in the third quarter of 2014 in the sales index in nominal terms occurred in Bizkaia, with a year-on-year fall of 1.3%. Álava and Gipuzkoa increased their nominal sales by 2.6% and 2.4%, respectively.
In constant prices, or prices without the price effect, the year-on-year sales index for retail trade rose to 1.6% in the third quarter, up from 0.4% in the previous quarter
For their part, the sales index for retail trade, not including service stations, posted an upturn in constant terms of 1.7% with respect to the third quarter of 2013.
In turn, the real decrease in the retail food trade index stood at 3.8%, while the index for trade of other products posted a rise of 6.0% with regards to the same quarter of 2013; for their part, the index for retail automotive fuel sales was up by 0.7% at constant prices.
Within retail food trade the year-on-year trend in real terms for specialised food trade was negative, with a fall of 2.1%, and non-specialised retail trade in mainly food also posted a downturn of 4.8%. In trade of other products, there was a rise in trade specialising in personal equipment (13.7%), in trade specialising in household equipment (3.3%), and in trade specialising in other consumer goods which rose by 0.2%; however, there was a fall in non-specialised retail trade in mainly other products, which was down by 2.6%.
By Province, Bizkaia posted a downturn at constant prices and in year-on-year terms of 0.2%, but in Álava and Gipuzkoa there were rises of 3.5% in both cases.
With regards to the previous quarter, there was a fall of 0.6% in real terms in the retail trade sales index in the Basque Country, once seasonal effects had been eliminated.
The number of people employed in the retail trade sector in the Basque Country overall in the third quarter of 2014 was down by 0.2% on the second quarter of 2014.
