Visitors to hotel establishments in the Basque Country increased by 4.7% in August 2014

The number of overnight stays registered an increase of 5.2% compared to the same month of the previous year

There were 308,692 visitors registered in the hotel establishments of the Basque Country in August 2014, 13,939 up on the same month of the previous year, which is an increase of 4.7%, according to Eustat data. Visitor numbers increased in the three provinces: in Álava they rose by 10.0%, in Gipuzkoa they were up 4.9% and in Bizkaia they increased by 3.0%.

Furthermore, overnight stays registered in hotel establishments of the Basque Country in August 2014 reached 659,357, which was an increase of 5.2% on those registered in August of the previous year, that is, there were 32,582 more overnight stays. There was also a positive evolution in overnight states in the three provinces: in Álava they increased by 10.0%, in Bizkaia they grew by 5.6% and in Gipuzkoa they were up by 3.1%.

The number of visitors from within Spain rose by 1.6% compared to August of the previous year, whilst the number of visitors from abroad rose by 8.6%. Álava saw an increase in foreign visitors of 13.2% and a rise in Spanish visitors of 8.1%. In Bizkaia the number of visitors from abroad was up by 10.3%, whereas the number of Spanish visitors fell by 3.1%. In Gipuzkoa there was an increase in foreign visitor numbers of 5.1%, and the number of Spanish visitors rose by 4.7%.

The average length of stay stood at 2.14 days and represented a slight increase with respect to that of August the previous year, which was 2.13 days. The figure for Álava in August 2014 was 1.86 days, the same as in August 2013; in Bizkaia it rose from 2.09 days in August 2013 to 2.14 days this August; and for its part, the average length of stay in Gipuzkoa dropped from 2.28 days in August 2013 to 2.24 days this August.

There was an increase of 4.5 percentage points in the bed occupancy rate for the Basque Country overall, where it went from 69.3% in August 2013 to 73.8% in August this year. Álava witnessed an increase of six percentage points, rising from an occupancy rate of 58.7% in August 2013 to a rate of 64.6% this August. Bizkaia saw an increase of 5.9 percentage points, going from a bed occupancy rate of 68.3% in August 2013 to a rate of 74.2% in August 2014. In Gipuzkoa the occupancy rate increased by 2.1 percentage points, going from 75.1% in August 2013 to 77.2% in August 2014.

The occupancy rate per room was also positive, up by 4.4 percentage points for the Basque Country overall, where the occupancy rate per room stood at 78.6%. In Álava it was up by 3.3 percentage points, standing at 66.7%; and in Bizkaia it increased by 7.2 percentage points, standing at 80.3%; whereas in Gipuzkoa it rose by 1.3 percentage points, standing at 81.2% occupancy per room.

The highest hotel bed occupancy rate in August this year was in Donostia-San Sebastián (85.9%), followed by the coast of Gipuzkoa (83.4%) and Bilbao (79.8%).

Taking into account the day of the week, at weekends there was a higher occupancy in the Basque Country as a whole in August 2014, with 76.0% of places occupied, whilst the registered occupancy stood at 72.8% on weekdays.

The bed occupancy rate during the Vitoria-Gasteiz Virgen Blanca (White Virgin) Festival stood at 77.2% in the hotel establishments of Álava

Visitor numbers during the 2014 Vitoria-Gasteiz Virgen Blanca Festival increased to 9,374 in the hotel establishments of Álava. These were visits that lasted from 4 to 9 August 2014 (6 nights). During this same period, there were 20,334 overnight stays in Álava, 13.8% more than in 2013. There was also an increase in visitor numbers of 7.1% in the province overall compared to the 2013 festival period. In 2014 the bed occupancy rate was 74.2%. In Vitoria-Gasteiz there were 6,633 visitors and 14,868 overnight stays, with a bed occupancy rate of 78.4% a room occupancy rate of 81.9%. Compared to 2013 visitor numbers increased by 11.1% and overnight stays by 12.7% in the capital.

The bed occupancy rate during the Donostia-San Sebastián Aste Nagusia Festival stood at 87.9% in the hotel establishments of Gipuzkoa

Visitor numbers during the 2014 Donostia-San Sebastián Aste Nagusia Festival increased to 29,925 in the hotel establishments of Gipuzkoa. These were visits that lasted from 9 to 16 August 2014 (8 nights). In this same period, the total number of overnight stays in Gipuzkoa was 73,193, with an occupancy rate per room of 83.9%. In Donostia-San Sebastián there were 14,170 visitors and 37,863 overnight stays, with a room occupancy rate of 94.0% and a bed occupancy rate of 90.0%. Compared to 2013, when the festival was held between 10 and 17 August (8 nights), visitor numbers decreased by 1.2% and overnight stays increased by 3.2%, and in Donostia-San Sebastián, visitors were up by 2.8% and overnight stays rose by 3.0%.

The bed occupancy rate during the Bilbao Aste Nagusia Festival stood at 86.0% in the hotel establishments of Bizkaia

Visitor numbers during the 2014 Bilbao Aste Nagusia Festival increased to 43,661 in the hotel establishments of Bizkaia. These were visits that lasted from 16 to 24 August 2014 (9 nights). In this same period, the total number of overnight stays in Bizkaia was 97,645, with an occupancy rate per room of 80.3%. In Bilbao the occupancy rate per room stood at 91.3% and per bed it was 86.0%. Compared to 2013, when the Semana Grande (Big Week) festival was held between 17 and 25 August (9 nights), both visitor numbers and overnight stays increased in Bizkaia, with visitor numbers rising by 6.1% and overnight stays by 3.5%. In Bilbao, they rose by 8.9% and 4.6% respectively.

In rural accommodation, visitor numbers increased by 19.3% and overnight stays rose by 7.2% in August

Rural tourism establishments and country cottages in the Basque Country recorded a total of 80,978 overnight stays in August, with an increase of 7.2% with respect to the same month of the previous year. At provincial level, they dropped 2.5% in Álava, they were up by 13.9% in Bizkaia and rose by 6.0% in Gipuzkoa.

The bed occupancy rate stood at 63.9% with a rise of 8.8 percentage points from the figures obtained in August 2013. Álava recorded an increase of 3.4 percentage points, with a bed occupancy rate of 36.8%. In Bizkaia the occupancy rate stood at 62.0%, representing an increase of 9.3 percentage points in comparison with August 2013. For its part, Gipuzkoa experienced a rise of 10.4 percentage points, with an occupancy rate of 76.5% for August.

There were 23,649 visitors to rural tourism establishments in the Basque Country in August, 19.3% more than the same month of the previous year. By province, in Álava the number of visitors was up by 32.4%, in Bizkaia there was an increase of 32.3%, and in Gipuzkoa there was an increase of 10.1%.

The 4,268 visitors originating from abroad signified an increase of 10.8% with regards to those received a year ago and represented 18.0% of the total number of visitors. For its part, the number of visitors from within Spain rose by 21.4%.

Finally, the average length of stay per visitor decreased this August compared to August 2013, standing at 3.42 days.
