There were 921 marriages registered in the first quarter of 2014, 7.6% up on the previous year

The proportion of civil marriages stood at 93%

The number of marriages in the Basque Country during the first quarter of 2014 rose to 921, 7.6% up on those in the same quarter of the previous year (856), although 32.1% fewer than the 1,356 celebrated in the fourth quarter of 2013, according to Eustat data. The first month of the year is characterised by the low number of marriages celebrated, particularly in January and February.

As has occurred in previous years, this quarter has seen the highest proportion of civil marriages of the whole year (92.7%), a slightly higher figure than the 90.8% for the same period of the previous year. The province with the highest proportion of civil marriages was Bizkaia, with 93.9%, and that with the lowest was Álava, with 88.1%; in Gipuzkoa the percentage was 92.8%.

In the 921 weddings in the first quarter of 2014, 895 men and 887 women resident in the Basque Country entered into marriage. For 749 spouses (83.7%) this was their first marriage, whilst 8 widowers and 138 divorcees remarried. The percentage of women entering into their first marriage was slightly higher than that for men, standing at 756 (85.2%); the number of widows rose to 5 and the number of divorcees stood at 126.

As regards the distribution of marriages according to the age of the couples, 88.5% of husbands were above the age of 30, whilst this percentage stood at 82.1% for wives. For both sexes there was a rise in the percentage of over-30s compared with the same period of the previous year, a quarter in which these percentages stood at 86.2% for men and 80.4% for women.

In the first quarter of 2014, 17.2% of recently married women and 12.8% of recently married men were foreign nationals. Amongst women, this percentage increased in comparison to the same period of 2013 (+1.6 points); however, amongst men, the proportion of foreigners decreased (-0.2 points).

On the other hand, 19 unions were celebrated between partners of the same sex, a figure below the 22 registered in the same quarter of the previous year; of these, 14 were between women and 5 between men.
