The sales index of the services in the Basque Country dropped by 1.0% in the first quarter of 2014

Trade was down by 1.8% and other services rose by 0.2%

The service sector index of the Basque Country showed a 1.0% nominal drop in sales in the first quarter of 2014 compared to the same period of the previous year, according to Eustat data.

Compared to the previous quarter, the sales index was down a nominal 0.7%, once any seasonal effects had been eliminated.

By sectors, the trade sales index was down 1.8% in nominal terms in the first quarter of 2014, whilst for other services, which form part of the index, it was up 0.2% with regards to the same period of 2013.

Within trade the Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles sector stood out for positive reasons, registering a nominal upturn of 8.1%. Retail Trade registered a fall of 1.1% and Wholesale trade dropped by 4.3%.

In all sectors related to Other services there were downturns of varying degrees, except in Transport & Storage, which was up by 7.6%. The biggest drops were recorded in the Scientific & Technical Professional Activities sector, with a drop of 5.3%, in Information & Communications, with a decrease of 3.8%, and in Administrative Activities & Auxiliary Services, which posted a negative result of 2.7%. In Hotel Management & Catering there was a drop of 1.4%.

By province, in Gipuzkoa there was an upturn of 2.6%, whilst in Álava the index fell by 2.4%, and in Bizkaia, by 2.6%.

In real terms, sales in the services sector fell by 0.9% in the first quarter, once the price effect had been eliminated

In Trade, the sales index was down by 1.8% and in Other Services there was no variation (0.0%) with regards to the same quarter of 2013 and at constant prices.

Within Trade the year-on-year trends were negative for all sectors, except for Sales and repair of motor vehicles, which rose by 9.3%. The sales index for Retail Trade fell by 2.0% and for Wholesale Trade it fell by 3.5%.

In the section Other Services, in constant euros, the sales index for Transport & Storage rose by 6.1%, and in the Information & Communications sector it rose by 0.2%. The sector Scientific & Technical Professional Activities fell by 6.6%, Administrative Activities & Auxiliary Services was down by 3.7% and Hotel Management & Catering fell by 0.7%.

The index of employed people in the overall services sector in the Basque Country in the first quarter of 2014 was down by 0.5% on the fourth quarter of 2013.
