The number of marriages in the Basque Country during the first quarter of 2013 stood at 822, 44.6% down on the 1,483 celebrated in the fourth quarter of 2012, and 18.8% down on the same quarter of the previous year (1,012), according to Eustat data. Traditionally, the first month of the year is characterised by the low number of marriages celebrated, above all in January and February.
As has occurred in previous years, this quarter has seen the highest proportion of civil marriages (91%), a slightly higher figure than the 90.1% for the same period of the previous year. The province with the highest proportion of civil marriages was Álava, with 94.4%, and that with the lowest was Gipuzkoa, with 87.2%. In Bizkaia the percentage was 92.9%.
In the 822 weddings in the first quarter of 2013, 796 men and 790 women resident in the Basque Country entered into marriage. For 672 spouses (84.4%) this was their first marriage, whilst 13 widowers and 111 divorcees remarried. The percentage of women entering into their first marriage was slightly lower than that for men, standing at 663 (83%.9%); the number of widows rose to 4 and the number of divorcees stood at 123.
As regards the distribution of marriages according to the age of the couples, 86.3% of husbands were above the age of 30, whilst this percentage stood at 80.4% for wives. In the case of men, this figure was lower than that for the same quarter of the previous year (87.5%), whilst women, with a percentage of 79.7%, maintained for a further quarter the upward trend in age on entering into marriage.
In the first quarter of 2013, 15.3% of recently married women and 12.8% of recently married men were foreign nationals. Amongst women, this percentage decreased in comparison to the same period of 2012 (-1.3 points); however, amongst men, the proportion of foreigners increased (+1.4 points).
On the other hand, 22 unions were celebrated between partners of the same sex, a figure below the 35 registered in the same quarter of the previous year; of these, 16 were between men and 6 between women.
