In the fourth quarter of 2012 religious marriages did not reach 20%
In 2012 the number of marriages in the Basque Country was down 2.3% compared to the previous year
In the fourth quarter of 2012 the number of civil marriages in the Basque Country grew with regards to the same period of the previous year, going from 76.6% in 2011 to 80.9% in 2012, according to Eustat data. Normally, during the last months of the year, there is a greater proportion of civil weddings than in the summer months, a period in which 39.3% of ceremonies were canonical and 60.7% were civil.
In the months of October, November and December 1,464 marriages were registered in the Basque Country, which was a drop of 5.1% compared to the same quarter in 2011. By provinces, in Bizkaia there were 769 weddings, in Gipuzkoa, 457 and in Álava, 202. In terms of those who fixed their residency outside our autonomous community, the number of weddings stood at 36.
1,400 men and 1,421 women resident in the Basque Country entered into marriage. For 1,225 spouses (87.5%) this was their first marriage, whilst 17 widowers and 158 divorcees remarried. The percentage of women entering into marriage for the first time was above that for men, and stood at 86.8% (1,234); 8 widows and 179 divorcees also remarried.
The percentage of recently-married women of foreign nationality increased
In the 4th quarter of 2012, 10.2% of new husbands and 14.4% of new wives were foreign nationals. Whilst the percentage of foreign husbands was identical to that for the same quarter of the previous year, that of foreign wives increased (12.3% in the fourth quarter of 2011).
Regarding the distribution of married couples according to the age of the spouses, in the fourth quarter of 2012 88.9% of recently married men were over 30 years of age, whereas amongst recently married women this percentage stood at 78.8%. These figures are above those for the same period of the previous year: 86.3% for men and 77.4% for women.
Furthermore, 23 marriages between individuals of the same sex were celebrated, a figure considerably below the 40 registered in the previous year.
Moreover in 2012 as a whole we can see the same tendency to delay the moment for entering into marriage, with 83.2% of husbands and 73.3% of wives doing so at the age of 30 or over, higher percentages than those in 2011 (83.5% and 71.8%, respectively).
In the provisional data for 2012, the number of marriages for individuals resident in the Basque Country fell by 2.3% with regards to the previous year. Regarding the type of wedding, the number of civil marriages exceeded that recorded in 2011 by 2.7 percentage points, accounting for 71.2% of the total.
