RETAIL TRADE INDEX (ICIm) 4th quarter 2012
Sales in the retail trade sector of the Basque Country dropped by 4.2% in the fourth quarter of 2012
Sales, not including service stations, were down by 5.0%
The retail trade sector of the Basque Country registered a 4.2% drop in nominal sales in the fourth quarter of 2012 with regards to the same period of the previous year, according to data provided by Eustat.
Sales in the sector, not including service stations, were down by 5.0% in year-on-year terms.
With respect to the previous quarter, the sales index was down a nominal 2.8%, once any seasonal effects had been eliminated.
By sectors, food products registered a drop of 3,7% in nominal sales in the fourth quarter of 2012, retail trade of other products saw a fall of 6,0% and sales of automotive fuel rose by 1,4%, all with regards to same period in 2011.
In the retail food sector, specialised trade was down by 5.5%, as non-specialised trade in mainly food products fell by 2.8%. In retail trade of other products there was a rise in specialised trade of other consumer goods (0.8%) and decreases of varying intensity in the rest of the sectors taken into consideration. The sector specialising in household equipment fell by 11.2%, personal equipment was down by 6.0% and retail trade specialising in mainly other products decreased by 3.5%.
By Provinces, the highest overall decrease in retail sector nominal sales in the fourth quarter of 2012 was in Bizkaia, which posted a 4.8% year-on-year fall. Nominal sales in Gipuzkoa were down by 4.3% and in Álava they dropped by 2.2%.
In constant prices, that is, without the price effect, sales in the retail trade sector fell by 7.0% in the fourth quarter.
For their part, retail trade sales, not including service stations, posted a real downturn at constant prices of 7.4% with respect to the same quarter of the previous year.
Compared to the third quarter, in the fourth quarter of 2012 there was a drop of 3.1% in real retail trade sales in the Basque Country, once seasonal effects had been eliminated.
In turn, the real decrease in retail food trade stood at 6.5%, in retail trade of other products this real decrease stood at 8.0% with regards to the same quarter of 2011 and retail automotive fuel sales were down by 5.3%.
Within retail food trade the year-on-year evolution for specialised food trade was negative, with a fall of 7.6%,with non-specialised retail trade in food also posting a downturn of 5.6%. There were decreases in all sectors in trade of other products. The sector specialising in household equipment was down by 11.7%, the personal equipment sector experienced a decrease of 8.3%, the sector specialising in other consumer goods fell by 5.2% and sales in non-specialised establishments of mainly other products dropped by 2.1%, all in real terms.
The three Provinces registered decreases in their sales in real terms: Bizkaia fell by 7.4%, Gipuzkoa was down by 7.0% and Álava dropped by 5.4%.
The number of people employed in the retail trade sector in the Basque Country overall in the fourth quarter of 2012 was down by 0.7% on the third quarter.
There was an accumulated nominal decrease of 3.1% in retail trade sales for the year overall. If service stations are excluded, other retail trade sales fell by 3.8%, in the accumulated data of 2012 with regards to 2011.
In real terms, there was a decrease of 5.3% in the sector as a whole, and without including service stations the decrease was 5.2%.
By province, the best results in nominal rates were registered in Álava, with a decrease of 1.4% in the year overall; Gipuzkoa dropped by 3.4% and Bizkaia was down by 3.5%. The pattern repeated at constant prices: Álava was down by 4.5%, Bizkaia by 5.3% and Gipuzkoa by 5.7%.
