Industrial prices rose by 0.5% in March 2010 compared to the previous month

Industrial prices rose by 1.7% compared to the previous year (March 2010 on March 2009)

Industrial prices rose by 0.5% in the Basque Country in March 2010 compared to the previous month, according to EUSTAT data. With these figures, the year-on-year rate for March, which indicates the fluctuation in industrial prices over the last twelve months, registered an upturn of 1.7%.

A more detailed sectorial analysis shows that the most inflationary branches in March 2010, with regard to the previous month were “Oil Refining” (6.6%), “”Textile and Garments” (1.3%), “Chemical Industry” (1.1%) and “Metallurgy and Metal Articles” (0.5%), among others. On the other hand, the following sectors witnessed the greatest falls in their prices: "Electricity, Gas and Water" (-3.1%), "Metallic and Non-metallic Minerals" (-0.9%), "Transport Equipment" (-0.4%) and "Paper, Publishing and Graphics” (-0.3%), among others.

Over the year-on-year period, March 2010 on March 2009, the highest growth in prices was registered by the branches of “Oil By-products" (40.3%) “Other Manufacturers” (4.6%), “Leather and Footwear” (1.8%), and “Non-metal Industry” (1.7%). However, the largest falls in prices were recorded in the following sectors: “Electricity, Gas and Water” (-7.3%), “Metallurgy and Metal Articles“ (-2.5%), the “Timber Industry " (-2.1%) and the “Food Industry” (-1.1%).

According to the classification of Goods by Economic Destination, the prices in the large sectorial groups performed differently in March. the price of Energy rose by 2.1%, Intermediary Goods by 0.4% and the prices of Capital Goods were down by 0.1%. Consumer Goods overall did not fluctuate noticeably, as the result of the slight decrease registered by Consumer Durables (-0.1%), as Consumer Non-Durables remained unchanged on the previous month (0.0%).

The price evolution of these large groups of goods reveals differences over the year-on-year period. Energy prices increased by 14.4%, Capital Goods rose by 0.2%, while Intermediary were down by 1.0% and Consumer Goods registered a 0.8% decrease. Among the latter, the prices of Consumer Durables fell by 1.5% while Consumer Non- Durables were down by 0.5%.
