Industrial prices fell by 0.2% in September 2009

The year-on-year downturn (September 2009 on September 2008) in industrial prices stood at 8.8%

Industrial prices fell by 0.2% in the Basque Country in September 2009, according to EUSTAT data. The year-on-year rate for September, which indicates the fluctuation in industrial prices over the last twelve months, therefore dropped by 8.8%.


A more detailed sectorial analysis shows that the most inflationary branches in September 2009, compared to the previous month, were “Electricity, gas and water” (1,7%), “Other Manufacturers” (0.6%), and the “Food Industry” (0.6%). By contrast, the sectors with the greatest fall in prices were “Oil By-products" (-4.6%), "Paper, Publishing and Graphics" (-0.9%), "Transport Equipment” (-0.3%), “Textile and Garments (-0.3%), “Timber Industry" D -0.2%) and Machinery (-0.2%).

During the year-on-year period, September 2009 on September 2008, the highest price increases were registered by the branches of “Metal and Non-Metal Minerals" (6.8%) “Transport Equipment” (2.3%) and “Non-metal Industry” (1.8%). However, the largest falls in prices were recorded in the following sectors: “Oil By-products" (-26.4%), “Metallurgy and Metal Articles” (-15.7%), “Electricity, Gas and Water" (-11.8%) and the “Timber Industry" (-5.9% ).

Following the classification of Goods by economic destination, the prices in the large sectorial groups performed differently in September: The price of Energy rose by 1.6%, Capital Goods were down by 0.3%, while Intermediary Goods were up by 0.1%. Consumer Goods, as a whole, fell by 0.3%, mainly as the result of the increase in Consumer Non-Durables (0.4%), as there were no changes to the prices of Consumer Durables (0.0%).

The price evolution of these large groups of goods reveals differences over the year-on-year period. Energy prices decreased by 19.8%, Intermediary Goods fell by 11.1%, Capital Goods rose by 0.9% and Consumer Goods registered a 0.8% decrease. Among the latter, the prices of Consumer Durables and Consumer Non-Durables both fell by 0.8% .
