Sales in the commercial sector of the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country increased by 5.0% in the fourth quarter of 2007

With these data, the accumulated average growth of sales in 2007 presents a nominal variation of 6.0%

The Interior Commerce Index for the fourth quarter of 2007 has experienced an inter-annual growth of 5.0% over the same period in the previous year, according to data provided by EUSTAT, the Basque Sttistics Office. Once the effect of the increase in prices has been subtracted, a 1.6% real increase in sales within the commercial sector has taken place over this last fourth quarter.

Wholesale commerce has increased its inter-annual sales by 5.2% throughout the fourth quarter of the current year, whereas retail commerce increased its sales by 4.6% over the same period.

Most noteworthy because of the increase in its sales within the wholesale sector is commerce in machinery and equipment (10.9% increase). Wholesale sales of non food-related consumption goods reached an inter-annual increase of 7.1%, whereas farming and food-related products increased their sales by 5.5%. There was also a 2.6% increase in sales of semi-finished goods and scrap metal.

The specialised retail sector registered an increase of 4.5%, the highest rates of growth corresponding to personal equipment (9.7%). Other consumption goods and food attained a smaller growth, of 4.3% and 2.3%, respectively and household equipment sales registered a 3.8% in nominal terms.

Non-specialised retail commerce experienced the sales increase of 4.9% in nominal terms, during the fourth quarter of 2007, and this is due both to food-related sales (5.0%) and to sales in the rest of products (4.1%).

The Interior Commerce Index for the fourth quarter registered positive nominal variations in the three territories, with the growth of 6.7% in Bizkaia, 3.2% in Gipuzkoa and 2.4% in Alava. In real terms, there is growth in Bizkaia (3.4%), whereas both Alava and Gipuzkoa registered the creases of 0.6%.

Personnel employed by the commercial sector in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country underwent a 2.7% increase during the fourth quarter of 2007 over the same quarter in the previous year, with an increase of 3.1% in the wholesale sector and an increase of 2.5% in the retail sector.


In the whole of 2007, the interior commerce sales index registered a nominal growth of 6.0% over the previous year: the wholesale commerce grew 6.9% and retail commerce 4.2%, during that annual period. If the effect of the increase in prices is subtracted and nominal figures are translated to real figures, the Interior Commerce Index grew by 2.0% during the whole of 2007, with an increase in wholesale commerce sales of 1.8% and retail commerce sales increasing by 2.5% over the same period in.

By territories, and during the whole of the year, the highest nominal increase was registered in Bizkaia, with the growth rate of 7.4%, followed by Alava with 4.8% and Gipuzkoa with 3.9%. In terms of constant values, Bizkaia grew 3.4%, Alava 0.4% and Gipuzkoa 0.3%.

Personnel employed grew in the average of all the fourth quarters of 2007 by 2.1%, with a 2,9% increase in wholesale commerce and 1.7% in the retail commerce.
