Industrial activity in the A.C. of the Basque Country increased by 2.4% in October 2005

The evolution of the first ten months of 2005 showed 2.7% growth in relation to the same period of last year

Industrial production in the A.C. of the Basque Country in October 2005 grew by 2.4% in relation to the same month of 2004, in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. For the first ten months as a whole, growth was 2.7% with regard to the same period of last year.

In October 2005, compared to September, industrial production in the A.C. of the Basque Country decreased by 1.0%, once seasonal effects were corrected in order for the inter-monthly data to be comparable.

Sectorial evolution

By sector, bearing in mind the classification of the major industrial sectors according to the economic destination of goods produced, the evolution of the index for October 2005 with regard to October 2004 shows the following variations: the highest inter-annual growth rate corresponded to Energy (8.3%), followed by Capital goods (5.2%) and Intermediate goods (1.0%). Consumer goods decreased by 3.7% overall, with a 3.2% fall for Consumer Durables and one of 4.0% for Consumer non-Durables, in relation to their position from a year before.

Over the accumulated period of the first ten months of 2005, Capital goods grew by 5.4%, Energy did so by 2.5%, Intermediate goods by 2.0% and Consumer goods by 0.4%, with 0.6% growth for Consumer non-Durables and no variation for Consumer Durables (0.0%), in each case compared to the first ten months of 2004.

Inter-monthly variation in October 2005, in relation to September 2005, differed for each of the major industrial sectors. Energy showed inter-monthly growth (5.1%), while in the other sectors there were decreases of varying degrees: Consumer goods decreased by 4.8%, with a 2.5% fall for Consumer Durables and one of 5.9% for Consumer non-Durables; Capital goods diminished by 1.1% and Intermediate goods did so by 0.9%.

Evolution by Province

By province, the inter-annual evolution of the Industrial Production Index for October showed a positive pattern right across the three provinces, rising 4.8% in Álava, growing 2.8% in Gipuzkoa and increasing 0.8% in Bizkaia.

Evolution of inter-monthly growth rates, deseasonalised figures for October 2005 in relation to September of the same year, was negative in all three provinces: a 1.1% decrease in Bizkaia, 1.0% in Álava and 0.8 % in Gipuzkoa.
