INDUSTRIAL PRICE INDEX (IPRI) JANUARY 2005



Industrial prices rose by 1.4% in January 2005



The inter-annual rise (January 2005 in relation to January 2004) for industrial prices came to 7.7%.


Industrial prices in the A.C. of the Basque Country registered a 1.4% rise in January 2005, according to EUSTAT data. These figures show growth of 7.7% in the inter-annual rate for January, which reflects the variation in industrial prices over the last twelve months.




A more detailed sectorial analysis shows the most inflationary branches in January 2005, compared to the previous month, to be “Metal and non-metal minerals” (5.7%), “Oil refining” (4.8%), "Leather and footwear industry" (2.5%), “Textiles and clothing” (1.9%), "Other manufactured" (1.8%) and "Metallurgy and metal articles" (1.6%), among others. Conversely, the only sector to experience a fall in prices during January was "Paper, printing and graphic arts" (-0.2%).


In the inter-annual period, January 2005 in relation to January 2004, the highest price rises occurred in the following branches: "Metallurgy and metal articles" (16.9%), “Metal and non-metal minerals” (16.7%), “Oil refining” (15.5%), "Machinery" (6.0%) and "Other manufactured" (3.5%). There were, on the other hand, falls in prices corresponding to the sectors of "Leather and footwear industry" (-4.3%), "Timber industry" (-0.2%) and "Electric material" (-0.2%).



Following the classification of Goods by economic destination, there was an upward trend in the evolution of all the major sectorial groups: Energy (3.7%), Intermediate Goods (1.3%), Consumer Goods (0.9%) which is sub-divided into Consumer Durable Goods (1.1%) and Consumer Non-Durable Goods (0.8%), and lastly, Capital Goods (0.6%).


The price evolutions of these major groups of Goods also showed marked differences over the inter-annual period. There were inter-annual rises for all of them: prices corresponding to Intermediate Goods rose 11.2%, those of Energy rose 10.6%, for Capital Goods they rose 3.7% and for Consumer Goods the increase was 2.4%, with growth of 2.3% for Consumer Durable Goods and 2.5% for Consumer Non-Durable Goods.
