The number of weddings for persons residing in the A.C. of the Basque Country in 2001 came to 9,706 and, although lacking data on marriages held outside the A.C. of the Basque Country, 680 fewer weddings were registered than the year before. The proportion of civil marriages is higher than in 2000, representing 33% of the total.
In the 1,936 weddings in the fourth quarter of 2001, 1,862 men and 1,915 women who were residents of the A.C. of the Basque Country were married. For 1,737 women (93.3%) this was their first marriage, while 16 widowers and 109 divorcés remarried. The percentage of first marriages for women was similar to that of the men: the number of single brides came to 1,788 (93.4%), there were 18 widows and 109 divorcées.
In this quarter there was a slight reduction in the number of civil weddings with regard to the same period the year before, falling from 827 in 2000 to 800 in 2001. In addition, traditionally there is a higher proportion of civil weddings during these months (41.3%) than during the summer months (26.9%), in which 4 out of every 10 weddings for the year are held.
With regard to the distribution of marriages according to the age of spouses, 66.8% of newly wed husbands were over 30in the fourth quarter of 2001, while among wives this percentage came to 50.8%. These proportions are higher than in the same quarter the year before.
For the whole of the year 2001, 62.4% of husbands and 43.5% of wives married at the age of 30 or over. These percentages are higher than for the previous year, especially among women with less than 40%, while for women the figure was 61%.
