Visitors to hotel establishments in the Basque Country rose by 5.9% in September 2019

In the balance for July, August, and September, visitor numbers increased by 2.7% and overnight stays by 3.6%

There were 316,931 visitors registered in the hotel establishments of the Basque Country in September 2019, 17,757 up on the same month of the previous year, which is an increase of 5.9% according to Eustat data. By province, the number of visitors was up 7.6% in Gipuzkoa, and 7.2% in Bizkaia, whereas in Álava they were down 3%.

Furthermore, overnight stays registered in hotel establishments of the Basque Country in September 2019 reached 627,884, which was an increase of 4.5% on those registered in September of the previous year, that is, there were 26,801 more overnight stays. There was a positive year-on-year change in overnight stays in Bizkaia and in Gipuzkoa, with an increase of 4.9% and 6.6% respectively. In Álava, on the other hand, they decreased by 3.9%.

The number of visitors from within Spain to the Basque Country registered a negative variation of 0.4% in September 2019 compared to September of the previous year. The number of visitors from abroad, on the other hand, rose by 12.8%. In the case of Álava, visitor numbers saw a downturn in both cases, of 0.1% for Spanish visitors and 8.5% in the case of foreign visitors. In Bizkaia the number of Spanish visitors was up 0.5% and the number of visitors from abroad rose by 14.2%. Finally, in Gipuzkoa there was a decrease in Spanish visitor numbers of 1.7% and the number of foreign visitors rose by 16.2%.

This September the average length of stay was 1.98 days, below the average length of stay of 2.01 days in September 2018. In Álava the average length of stay fell from 1.89 days last September to 1.87 days in September 2019, and in Bizkaia it decreased from 1.95 days to 1.91 days. Finally, in Gipuzkoa the average length of stay was also down from 2.12 days in September 2018 to 2.11 days in September 2019.

There was an increase of 0.7 percentage points in the bed occupancy rate for the Basque Country overall, where it went from 66.6% in September 2018 to 67.3% in September this year. Álava experienced a drop of 1.7 percentage points, down from 60.6% to 58.9%. Bizkaia witnessed an increase of 0.6 percentage points, rising from an occupancy rate of 64.9% in September 2018 to a rate of 65.6% this September. In Gipuzkoa the occupancy rate increased by 1.5 percentage points, rising from 70.9% in September of the previous year to 72.4% last September.

The occupancy rate per room also registered an increase, with a 0.9 percentage point rise for the Basque Country overall, reaching 81.1%. In Álava it was down by 0.2 percentage points, standing at 73.9%, and in Bizkaia it increased by 0.6 percentage points, reaching 81.0%, and in Gipuzkoa there was a rise of 1.6 percentage points, registering 83.9% occupancy per room.

The highest hotel bed occupancy rate in September this year was in Donostia-San Sebastián (78.7%), followed by Gipuzkoa Costa (74.3%) and Bilbao (69.9%).

Taking into account the day of the week, at weekends there was a higher occupancy in the Basque Country as a whole in September 2019, with 76.3% of beds occupied, whilst the registered occupancy stood at 64.0% on weekdays.

Finally, with regards to the profitability indicators of the sector, the average daily rate (ADR) of hotels in the Basque Country stood at 107.92 euros in September 2019, 6.0% up on the year before. The average rate stood at 73.97 euros in Álava, where it rose by 0.41%, in Bizkaia with an average rate of 96.11 euros, it increased by 7.42% and in Gipuzkoa with 132.10 euros, the average rate was up 5.22%.

The revenue per available room (RevPAR) in the Basque Country overall, which is dependent on the occupancy rate of hotel establishments, stood at 87.57 euros in September 2019, a 7.2% increase on September 2018. The RevPAR stood at 54.63 euros in Álava, 77.84 euros in Bizkaia, and 110.79 euros in Gipuzkoa.

The bed occupancy rate during the Donostia-San Sebastián Zinemaldia Film Festival stood at 92.7% and the occupancy rate during Festval (Television Festival) in Vitoria-Gasteiz was 73%

In Donostia-San Sebastián, during the Zinemaldia celebrations, between 19 and 28 September 2019 (10 nights), 21,850 visitors and 50,682 overnight stays were registered, with an occupancy rate per room of 92.7% and per bed of 77.1%. Compared to 2018, when Zinemaldia was held between 20 and 29 September (10 nights), visitor numbers increased in Donostia-San Sebastián by 6.0% whilst overnight stays were up by 8.0%.

In Vitoria-Gasteiz there were 4,960 visitors and 10,332 overnight stays during the 2019 Festval over the dates of 3 to 08 September 2019 (6 nights), with an occupancy rate per bed of 57.4% and per room of 73.0%. Compared to 2018 visitor numbers increased by 1.1% and overnight stays were down 6.4%.

In the months of July, August and September visitor numbers to hotel establishments rose by 2.7% in the Basque Country overall; in other words there were 26,075 more visitors than in the same three months of 2018. Gipuzkoa saw a 4.4% increase in visitor numbers compared to the same period of the previous year, in Bizkaia there was a rise in visitor numbers of 3.6%, but in Álava there was a drop of 5.2%.

For its part, overnight stays registered a rise of 3.6% in the Basque Country overall in July, August and September 2019 compared to July, August and September 2018. In Gipuzkoa they were up by 5.9%, in Bizkaia they increased by 3.2%, but in Álava they were down 1.9%.

The bed occupancy rate achieved in July, August and September 2019 for the Basque Country overall stood at 72.8%, an improvement of 0.2 percentage points on the figure obtained in the same period of 2018.

In rural accommodation, visitor numbers increased by 5.7% and overnight stays fell by 0.9% in September 2019

This September there were 19,311 visitors to rural tourism establishments in the Basque Country, 5.7% more than in the same month of the previous year. By province, in Álava the number of visitors increased by 8.1%, in Gipuzkoa there was a decrease of 3.9%, and Bizkaia registered a rise of 20.2%. The 5,577 visitors originating from abroad signified a rise of 27.5% with regards to those received a year ago and represented 28.9% of the total number of visitors. For its part, the number of visitors from within Spain rose by 3.7%.

Rural tourism establishments and country cottages in the Basque Country recorded a total of 46,000 overnight stays in September 2019, which was a drop of 0.9% compared to the same month of the previous year. At a provincial level, in Álava they increased by 17.2%, in Bizkaia they rose by 16.1%, whilst in Gipuzkoa they were down 13.3%.

The bed occupancy rate in the Basque Country stood at 34.3% with a fall of 1.1 percentage points from the figures obtained in September 2018. Álava recorded an increase of 2.2 percentage points, with a bed occupancy rate of 23.4%. In Bizkaia the occupancy rate was 37.9%, which meant an increase of 4.8 percentage points in relation to September 2018, and Gipuzkoa saw a fall of 6.1 percentage points to an occupancy rate of 37.2% this September.

Lastly, the average length of stay per visitor has gone from 2.54 days in September 2018 to 2.38 days in this past month.

Balance for July, August and September 2019 in rural accommodation: Visitors were down by 0.2% and overnight stays by 4.3%

In the months of July, August and September 2019 as a whole, visitor numbers to the Basque Country decreased by 0.2%, in other words there were 147 fewer visitors than in the same three months of 2018. Álava saw a 7.2% increase in visitor numbers compared to the same period of the previous year, in Bizkaia there was a rise in visitor numbers of 4.4% and in Gipuzkoa they were up by 5.3%.

Overnight stays registered a decrease of 4.3% in the Basque Country overall in July, August and September 2019 compared to the same period of the previous year. In Álava they were up 10%, whilst in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa they were down 4% and 7.9%, respectively.

The bed occupancy rate achieved in July, August and September 2019 for the Basque Country overall stood at 48.5%, 2.4 percentage points down on the rate obtained in the same period in 2018.
