Visitors to hotel establishments in the Basque Country rose by 0.8% in August 2019
In July and August the number of visitors increased by 1.2% and overnight stays by 3.3%
There were 357,035 visitors registered in the hotel establishments of the Basque Country in August 2019, 2,889 up on the same month of the previous year, which is an increase of 0.8%, according to Eustat data. By provinces, the number of visitors was up by 3.1% in Bizkaia, whereas there was a drop of 4.2% in Álava, and 0.1% in Gipuzkoa.
Furthermore, overnight stays registered in hotel establishments of the Basque Country in August 2019 reached 780,269, which was an increase of 1.9% on those registered in August of the previous year; that is, there were 14,808 more overnight stays. There was a positive year-on-year change in overnight stays in Bizkaia, where they rose by 1.8% and in Gipuzkoa, where they were up 3.5%, whereas in Álava they were down 2.5%.
The number of visitors from within Spain to the Basque Country registered a positive variation of 0.3% in August 2019 compared to August of the previous year. In turn, the number of visitors from abroad increased by 1.4%. In the case of Álava, visitor numbers saw a downturn in both cases, of -1.7% for Spanish visitors and -8.0% in the case of foreign visitors. In Bizkaia the number of Spanish visitors was up 3.1% and the number of visitors from abroad rose by 3.0%. In Gipuzkoa there was a decrease in Spanish visitor numbers of 2.6% and the number of foreign visitors rose by 2.4%.
This August the average length of stay was 2.19 days, above the average length of stay of 2.16 days registered in August 2018. In Álava there was an increase from 1.94 days last year to 1.98 days in August of this year; in Bizkaia there was a drop from 2.14 days to 2.11 days; and finally in Gipuzkoa, the average length of stay rose from 2.27 days in August 2018 to 2.36 days last August.
There was a decrease of 0.8 percentage points in the bed occupancy rate for the Basque Country overall, where it went from 80.5% in August 2018 to 79.6% last August. Álava experienced a drop of 1.6 percentage points, down from 73.6% to 72.0%. Bizkaia witnessed a fall of 1.1 percentage points, dropping from an occupancy rate of 80.2% in September 2018 to a rate of 79.2% this September. In Gipuzkoa the occupancy rate decreased by 0.4 percentage points, dropping from 83.2% in August of the previous year to 82.9% last August.
The occupancy rate per room also registered a decrease, of one percentage point for the Basque Country overall, reaching 84.9%. In Álava it was down by 0.2 percentage points, standing at 79.3%, and in Bizkaia it decreased by 1.6 percentage points, reaching 83.6%. Meanwhile, in Gipuzkoa there was a drop of 0.5 percentage points, registering 88.3% occupancy per room.
The highest hotel bed occupancy rate in August this year was in Donostia-San Sebastián (89.3%), followed by Gipuzkoa Costa (86.4%) and Bilbao (82.6%).
Taking into account the day of the week, at weekends there was a higher occupancy in the Basque Country as a whole in August 2019, with 79.9% of places occupied, whilst the registered occupancy stood at 79.5% on weekdays.
Finally, with regards to the profitability indicators of the sector, the average daily rate (ADR) of hotels in the Basque Country stood at 117.6 euros in August 2019, 6.9% up on the year before. The average rate stood at 79.9 euros in Álava, where it increased by 2.3%; 97.7 euros in Bizkaia, with an increase of 6.7%, and 152.3 euros in Gipuzkoa, where it went up by 7.3%.
The revenue per available room (RevPAR) in the Basque Country overall, which is dependent on the occupancy rate of hotel establishments, stood at 99.8 euros in August 2019, a 5.7% increase on August 2018. The RevPAR stood at 63.4 euros in Álava, 81.7 euros in Bizkaia, and 134.4 euros in Gipuzkoa.
The occupancy rate per room during the festivals of the three Basque capitals was 95.0% in Donostia-San Sebastián, 90.7% in Vitoria-Gasteiz, and 86.8% in Bilbao
In Donostia-San Sebastián, during the Aste Nagusia celebrations, between 10 and 17 August 2019 (8 nights), 19,653 visitors and 49,164 overnight stays were recorded, with an occupancy rate per room of 91.8% and per bed of 95.0%. Compared to 2018, when the festival was held between 11 and 18 August (8 nights), visitor numbers increased in Donostia-San Sebastián by 2.1% whilst overnight stays were up by 4.6%.
In Vitoria-Gasteiz there were 6,822 visitors and 15,335 overnight stays during the 2019 Virgen Blanca festival, over the dates of 4 to 09 August 2019 (6 nights), with an occupancy rate per bed of 80.0% and per room of 90.7%. Compared to 2018 visitor numbers decreased by 8.6% and overnight stays increased by 4.5%.
Visitor numbers during the 2019 Bilbao Aste Nagusia Festival increased to 31,600 in the hotel establishments of the capital of Bizkaia. These were visits that occurred from 17 to 25 August 2019 (9 nights). In this same period, the total number of overnight stays was 65,378, with an occupancy rate per bed of 83.4% and per room of 86.8%. Compared to 2018, when the Semana Grande (Big Week) festival was held between 18 and 26 August (9 nights), visitor numbers increased by 7.6%, and overnight stays were up by 5.2%.
Balance for July and August Visitor numbers increased by 1.2% and overnight stays by 3.3% in the Basque Country overall
In the months of July and August visitor numbers to hotel establishments rose by 1.2% in the Basque Country overall; in other words there were 8,318 more visitors than in the same two months of 2018. Gipuzkoa saw a 3.0% increase in visitor numbers compared to the same period of the previous year, in Bizkaia there was a rise in visitor numbers of 2.1%, but in Álava there was a drop of 6.1%.
For its part, overnight stays registered a rise of 3.3% in the Basque Country overall in July and August 2019 compared to July and August 2018. In Gipuzkoa they were up by 5.6%, in Bizkaia they increased by 2.5%, but in Álava they were down 1.0%.
The bed occupancy rate achieved in July and August 2019 for the Basque Country overall stood at 75.4%, equalising that obtained in the same period in 2018.
In rural accommodation, visitor numbers decreased by 0.3% and overnight stays fell by 4.4% in August 2019
There were 23,536 visitors to rural tourism establishments in the Basque Country in August, 0.3% down on the same month of the previous year. By province, in Álava the number of visitors remained unchanged, but in Gipuzkoa there was a rise of 0.1%, and in Bizkaia there was an decrease of 1.0%. The 5,155 visitors originating from abroad signified a fall of 1.7% with regards to those received a year ago and represented 21.9% of the total number of visitors. For its part, the number of visitors from within Spain rose by 0.1%.
Rural tourism establishments and country cottages in the Basque Country recorded a total of 90,486 overnight stays in August, which was a drop of 4.4% in comparison with the same month of the previous year. At provincial level, they were up 3.3% in Álava, but in Bizkaia they were down by 9.5% and in Gipuzkoa they decreased by 3.3%.
The bed occupancy rate stood at 64.0% with a fall of 3.7 percentage points from the figures obtained in August 2018. Álava also recorded a decrease of 3.0 percentage points, with a bed occupancy rate of 44.6%. In Bizkaia the occupancy rate was 65.7%, which meant a decrease of 5.4 percentage points in relation to August 2018, and Gipuzkoa saw a fall of 2.0 percentage points to an occupancy rate of 72.3% in August 2019.
Lastly, the average length of stay per visitor has gone from 4.01 days in August 2018 to 3.84 days in this past month.
Balance for July and August 2019 in rural accommodation: Visitors were down by 2.6% and overnight stays by 5.3%
In the months of July and August 2019 as a whole, visitor numbers to the Basque Country decreased by 2.6%, in other words there were 1,191 fewer visitors than in the same two months of 2018. Álava saw a 6.9% increase in visitor numbers compared to the same period of the previous year, in Bizkaia there was a drop in visitor numbers of 1.8% and in Gipuzkoa the decrease reached 5.9%.
Overnight stays registered a decrease of 5.3% in the Basque Country overall in July and August 2019 compared to July and August 2018. In Álava they were up by 7.9%, in Bizkaia 9.0% and in Gipuzkoa they decreased by 6.2%.
The bed occupancy rate achieved in July and August 2019 for the Basque Country overall stood at 55.3%, 2.8 percentage points fewer than those obtained in the same period in 2018.
