Overall level of Basque language

This variable was obtained by assigning a type -"not at all", "with difficulty", "well"-, to the four basic indicators of the Population Census referring to knowledge of the Basque language: Can you understand it? Can you speak it? Can you read it? Can you write it?

  • Partially literate Basque speakers: people who understand and speak well in Basque, but have problems reading and writing.

  • Basque speakers without literacy skills: people who understand and speak well in Basque, but cannot read or write in Basque.

  • Quasi-Basque speakers with literacy skills: people who understand Basque easily or with difficulty, speak with difficulty and can read and write well or with difficulty.

  • Quasi-Basque speakers without literacy skills: people who understand Basque easily or with difficulty and cannot read or write in Basque.

  • Passive quasi-Basque speakers: people who understand Basque easily or with difficulty but who cannot speak Basque at all.

  • Non Basque speakers: people who cannot understand or speak Basque.
