Objectives

The aim of this operation is to obtain an indicator of short-term trends in sales and employed personnel in the retail sector, specifically large stores and food chains. The following variables are to be analysed:

- Employed personnel: includes both salaried (permanent and temporary) and non-salaried (freelancers) staff and indicates the average number of people employed in a given month.

- Income via sales: the total turnover of a company, excluding vat, across all of its Basque Country based establishments, broken down by province.

Coverage

Population:
The target population of study comprises those Basque Country establishments with a sales area equal to or greater than 2500 square metres and food chains. Food chain refers to a company with a minimum of three premises and more than 100 employees in the basque country, including any large stores it may have.

The activity carried out on large store premises corresponds to division 47 of the national activities classification (cnae 2009), retail trade, except motor vehicles and motorcycles. The activity carried out by food chains corresponds to activity 4711 of the cnae 2009, retail trade in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating.

Geographic area:
All Basque Country based establishments which form part of the population coverage are to be the focus of this study.
Timeframe:
The large stores and food chains trade index is calculated on a monthly basis. The index base or reference period is 2015. The arithmetic mean of the twelve monthly indices published of the base period, 2015, is equal to 100. The different indices published on a monthly basis shall therefore be for this year.

Sample design

The large stores and food chains trade index is of a census nature and comprises all those Basque Country based establishments with a minimum sales area of 2500 square metres, whose activity is included under division 47 of the cnae 2009, (retail trade, except motor vehicles and motorcycles) in addition to food chains. A food chain is defined as a company with a minimum of three premises and more than 100 employees in the Basque Country, including any large stores it may have, and more than 100 employees, which is involved in retail trade in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating (4711 cnae 2009).

Indices are obtained for each of the two variables analysed. The overall sales index is broken down into food and other products. Indices are calculated using the laspeyres formula. Indices are corrected for both seasonal and calendar effects. Indices corrected for calendar effects offer comparable year-on-year figures, whilst non-seasonal indices are used for month-on-month comparisons. Sales figures are obtained in both nominal terms (current prices), on the basis of direct sales information from surveys, and real terms (constant prices for the corresponding base year, currently 2015), from the deflation of the former.
