The objective of this operation is to obtain a business cycle indicator of the evolution of sales and the number of people employed in the Service Sector in the Basque Country, along with its relevant sub-sectors.

Thus, the variables analysed are as follows:

- Persons Employed: it includes both the employees (permanent and temporary) and the non-employees (self-employed), by indicating the average of persons employed in the quarter.

- Income from Sales: it includes the total turnover, excluding VAT, by the company in all the establishments which it has in the Basque Country, aggregated by provinces.



The population scope of the Service Sector Index include the Trade, Transport and Storage, Hotel Management & Catering, Information & Communications, Professional Activities, Administrative, Technical & Scientific Activities and Auxiliary Services sub-sectors that are classified in NACE Rev. 2 (CNAE 2009) as follows:

A. Trade: The establishments whose main activity is Wholesale Trade (division 46), Retail Trade (division 47) or the Sale and Repair of vehicle and motorbikes (Division 45).

B. Other Services: The establishments whose main activity consists of Transport & Warehouse (Section H), Hotel Management & Catering (Section I), Information & Communications (Section J), Technical, Scientific and Professional Activities (part of Section M) or Administrative Activities and Auxiliary Services (part of Section N).


The Service Sector Index is calculated both for the Basque Country overall and by Province.


The Service Sector Index is prepared quarterly, using the data on the volume of total sales and the people employed in each quarter in the commercial establishments that make up the sample for the Index.

The reference or base period of the index is 2015.

Sample Design

The statistical unit used is the company in the part of activity performed in the Basque Country when the main economic activity is providing any of the services include in the population sphere.

The sample design is based on a probabilistic sampling in two phases: an initial phase where the units with the units that have 50 or more employees in Basque country and units with between 10 and 50 employees which have establishments in the three historical territoriesare selected with probability "one. A stratified random sampling is performed in the second phase.
