Objective

A study prepared for the countries belonging to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) suggests that there a close link between education and economic growth. According to that study, an additional year of schooling on average can increase economic growth in the short term by up to 5% and an extra 2.5% in the long-term. Completing upper secondary education is generally considered as the minimum level required to successfully participate in the knowledge society. This is of great importance not only to satisfactorily enter the job market, but also to enable students to access the learning and training operations provided by higher education.

Educational success is the determining primary factor relating to individual income and status on the job market. People that have completed upper secondary education have access to better paid jobs and better working conditions, as well as have a markedly higher employment average that those with lower training. A minimum education level indicator is the rate of population aged 20-24 years old that have completed at least secondary studies.

The rate of the population aged 20-24 years old that have completed at least secondary education is calculated by dividing the number of people that have completed at least secondary education in the 20-24 age group by the total population of that age bracket The indicator is based on the Population in Relation with Activity Survey (PRA). The survery covers the whole populations that live in “households” and excludes those that reside in collective dwellings, such as shelters, student halls of residence, hospitals,...
